THE COMPLETE HISTORIC AIRCRAFT REGISTER OF NETHERLANDS NEW GUINEA Until 1949 New Guinea was part of the Netherlands East Indies. When in 1949 the Dutch East Indies became independent of the Netherlands, forming Indonesia, New Guinea was kept outside of the sovereignty agreement. After 1949 aircraft in Netherlands New Guinea flew with (Dutch) PH-markings, but in 1954 it was decided to form a separate aircraft register, introducing the JZ- prefix. First entries in the register (JZ-PAA and PAB) were on 5.12.1954. The register remained active until 1963, when New Guinea, via a United Nations administration, was handed over to Indonesia. last update: Nov 6, 2023 Database compiled by Arno Landewers, Bleiswijk, Netherlands (email: alandewers@gmail.com) JZ-ACB de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth 83999 A-29 (SOC 230163), T7602 00.00.1963 Aero Club Biak. 00.00.1963 Registration cancelled. The aircraft crashed however into a ditch on the side of the airstrip, turned over and broke into three parts. There was no fire. Although all with severe inhuries, Verheijen and his three passangers survived the crash. The aircraft was destroyed. In 1982 still some fuselage plating was kept on the door of one of the local houses as a keepsake. About 30 minutes after departure pilot Henk Vergouwen contacted via radio the base at Sentani to ask about the weather in Sibil. He reported that he was flying in rain below low clouds. Because the weather at Sibil was better, he decided to continue. After the aircraft did not arrive at Sibil, extensive search was started, without result. Only at 21 februari 1965 the wreckage was found by a special expedition which started after reports from local papua's. Also the remains of Vergouwen could be secured. From investigation of the crash site, 25 km North of Uruba, it was concluded that the aircraft must have hit the trees while flying low.
